If you're a US resident and your study payments from User Interviews total $600 or more in a given year, the IRS requires you to report those earnings on your tax return.
If your cumulative annual payments issued by User Interviews reach $600 or more, you'll receive a 1099 form by January 31. One copy goes to you and one to the IRS. Incentives issued by the researcher are not included in this total.
Once your payments reach $600, you'll be prompted to complete a W-9 in Tremendous. You must complete the W-9 before you can redeem further incentives. Note that incentive payments are considered income when the reward is issued, not when it's redeemed.
We use Avalara (formerly Track1099) to securely file 1099s. For more information about their security policies, visit Avalara's 1099 page.
For questions about your personal tax situation, we recommend speaking with a financial advisor.
If you're located outside the US or redeem incentives in currencies other than USD, we won't send a 1099. Instead, we'll request a W-8BEN to confirm that a 1099 filing isn't required on your behalf. Please check your local tax rules for guidance.

Why do I need to complete a W-9?
You received a request to complete a W-9 because you were issued $600 or more in gift cards from User Interviews. The W-9 gives us the information we need to file a 1099 with the IRS on your behalf, as required by law.
I'm being asked to complete a W-9, but I'm not a US resident. Should I submit a W-8BEN instead?
Yes. We send a W-8BEN request to all participants located outside the US using the email address on file. The request will come from Avalara (formerly Track1099). This form confirms that a US 1099 filing isn't required for you.
When will I receive my 1099 form?
All 1099 forms for a given calendar year are processed no later than January 31.
How will my 1099 be delivered?
Your 1099 will be delivered based on the preference you selected. If you consented to e-delivery, it will be emailed to you from Avalara (formerly Track1099). If you declined e-delivery, it will be mailed to the address on your W-9.
Are my rewards counted as income when I redeem them?
No. Rewards are counted as taxable income when User Interviews issues them, regardless of when you redeem.
